This scene is called 'Angelic Betrayers', from the 5th book in the series 'Forlorn Raider' by Travis Laughlin.

Raider's armour is deliberately bad-looking as it was made from whatever was available at the time, as this description from the book tells us:

"The terribly rugged patched-up black leather armour I’m wearing might provide some concealment. But it badly needs fixed. Roze, Forina and I are horrible with needles and leatherwork.

I did the best I could out of the scraps found around town and combined it with what little remained of my original set. Now, it’s a hodgepodge of hides made from Alvernian cow, Alvernian demon, Ararian reptilian, and the Ararian version of a cow. Black, brown, some yellow, and even burned green ends. Yeah, who am I kidding, I can’t hide from shit with this crap on.

It probably won’t even protect me from harsh language, let alone a weapon."
